Buying CCTV is no longer just about “how many cameras”. The right system depends on what you need to see, where, and how you will watch it. Here is the checklist our engineers use on every site survey.
1. Start with what you need to see
Decide whether you need to detect movement, recognise a familiar person, or identify a stranger or number plate. Identification needs more resolution and a narrower field of view than general overview cameras.
2. HD analog or IP?
- HD analog (DVR): cost-effective, works on existing coaxial cable — ideal for upgrades.
- IP (NVR): higher resolution, smart analytics and one-cable PoE installation — ideal for new buildings and larger sites.
3. Pick the right camera type
- Dome for indoors and discreet coverage.
- Bullet for long outdoor views and visible deterrence.
- PTZ for large areas you want to pan and zoom.
- 4G / solar where there is no power or internet — farms, construction sites, gates.
4. Plan storage and backup power
Recording days depend on camera count, resolution and motion. Always add a UPS so recording continues during power cuts.
5. Remote viewing and support
Make sure you can view cameras on your phone securely, and that your installer offers AMC and fast service. A camera that is offline when you need it is no camera at all.
